A weekend of fresh air, mountain scenery.......and bear talk. Join bear expert Chris Morgan for a hike through the beautiful Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Chris takes small groups of people to learn about black and grizzly bear behavior and ecology from the clues that bears leave behind. Learn how to co-exist with bears by camping and hiking safely and sensitively and understanding these wonderful animals in their own environment. Learn about the research efforts and the people that are striving to maintain the eight bear species of the world. At the same time, soak up the atmosphere of the wilderness, enjoy a campfire chat and return home invigorated and refreshed.

Log broken up by bear searching for ants (IWM, Inc.)
BearTrack weekends give you the opportunity to learn everything you ever wanted to know about bears, from a bear biologist. That includes biology, behavior, research methods, bear sign, safety concerns and conservation. During these backcountry weekends Chris Morgan will be on hand to teach BearTrackers about the bears of the world, and the bears of Washington. We may even be lucky enough to observe bears in their natural habitat.

The Evergreen state is home to two bear species - there are an estimated 25,000 black bears and fewer than 30 grizzly bears. These fascinating animals are often misunderstood, and this is a great opportunity to learn about them in the outdoor classroom that is the Cascade mountain range.Bear resistant food container (BRFC) (IWM, Inc.)

The weekends begin on a Friday evening at the trailhead campground where we spend the night. On the Saturday morning we set off on our hike towards camp. The hike is usually 5-7 miles into prime bear country, with frequent stops to look for bears, bear sign and other wildlife. The hikes are not too demanding and should be fine for hikers in average condition. A little experience obviously helps, but don't let it put you off if you haven't spent much time in the woods. When we arrive at our backcountry camp we learn about setting up a Bear Safe camp and stay overnight. More explorations follow the next day - all the while searching for bear sign and bears. The group then returns to the trailhead - invigorated by exercise, freshair and stimulating conversation.

Weather and conditions determine which route is chosen a little closer to the time, but all of the hikes are accessed by Highways 2, 20 or 542 (depending upon the selected route). BearTrack destinations are between 2 and 4 hours from Seattle. Some are on the east side of the mountain passes and some are located on the west side. All of them offer stunning scenery and have been selected due to their rich wildlife and prime bear habitat. The east side is almost always drier, so we like to keep our options open.

Hikers use the Bear Safe guide (IWM, Inc.)

A BearTrack weekend will appeal to those people who love the outdoors, and especially those who visit it frequently. Even if you don't, you may still come along to soak up the atmosphere of bear country first hand - it is an experience that you will never forget. We are unable to offer hotel accommodation, full cooked breakfasts or guaranteed weather. We ARE able to offer a unique insight into the world of the bear that you will carry with you forever. Come with an open mind, and watch it unfold even further.

Early sign-up is advised in order to avoid disappointment. Our trips are restricted in size and number, and this great offer means that we are taking bookings rapidly. Please call (360) 734 6060, or email beartrack@insightwildlife.com to reserve your place.

New for BearTrack
We have been asked to broaden our range of BearTrack trips to include 'luxury' weekends, and also single/half day tours. These packages would appeal to those individuals who do not wish to camp, but would still thrill at the excitement of visiting bear habitat with a bear specialist guide, on a more moderate physical level. Our luxury BearTrack weekends include accommodation in a cozy mountain lodge, day hikes, stunning slide shows and wonderful food. Our single/half day hikes take place in the Bellingham/Whatcom Country area for ease of access. For more information on these trips please call us on 360 734 6060 or email beartrack@insightwildlife.com. You can also keep updated on our activities by sending an email message with the word 'subscribe' in the subject line to: insight@insightwildlife.com
