Many
thanks for your interest in our BearTrack weekends. You've come
to the right place if you want to join a small group of interesting
people (eight clients maximum) for an informative and fun weekend in Washington's
wilderness.
BearTrack weekends give you the opportunity to
learn everything you ever wanted to know about bears, from a bear
biologist. That includes biology, behavior, research methods, bear sign,
safety concerns and conservation. During these backcountry weekends Chris
Morgan will be on hand to teach BearTrackers about the bears of the world,
and the bears of Washington. We may even be lucky
enough to observe bears in their natural habitat.
The Evergreen state is home to two bear species
- there are an estimated 25,000 black bears and fewer than 30 grizzly
bears. These fascinating animals are often misunderstood, and this
is a great opportunity to learn about them in the outdoor classroom that
is the Cascade mountain range.
The weekends begin on a Friday evening at the trailhead campground where we spend the night. On the Saturday morning we set off on our hike towards camp. The hike is usually 5-7 miles into prime bear country, with frequent stops to look for bears, bear sign and other wildlife. The hikes are not too demanding and should be fine for hikers in average condition. A little experience obviously helps, but don't let it put you off if you haven't spent much time in the woods. When we arrive at our backcountry camp we learn about setting up a Bear Safe camp and stay overnight. More explorations follow the next day - all the while searching for bear sign and bears. The group then returns to the trailhead - invigorated by exercise, freshair and stimulating conversation.
Weather and conditions determine which
route is chosen a little closer to the time, but all of the hikes
are accessed by Highways 2, 20 or 542 (depending upon the selected route).
BearTrack
destinations are between 2 and 4 hours from Seattle. Some are on the
east side of the mountain passes and some are located on the west side.
All of them offer stunning scenery and have been selected due to their
rich wildlife and prime bear habitat. The east side is almost always drier,
so we like to keep our options open.
